FAQ

A few things people often want to know before beginning. If your question isn’t here, please ask — no question is too small or silly!

What is the difference between a therapist, a psychologist and a counsellor?

Your specialist might describe themselves as a counsellor, psychological wellbeing practitioner, therapist, mental health social worker, psychologist, psychoanalyst or psychiatrist. All of these titles should mean the person is trained in delivering therapy, though educational backgrounds and levels of training differ. Whatever the title — what matters most is that the person delivering your therapy is someone you feel comfortable talking to.

How long is a session?

Fifty minutes is the standard. If needed, extra time can be negotiated before the session begins.

Do I need to prepare anything before my first session?

An intake form is sent to your email beforehand — please fill it out and return it. Other than that, no preparation is needed. We'll take things at whatever pace is best for you.

What happens in the first session?

We outline the confidentiality policy, contact between sessions, the type of work I do and how it could help, how long support may last, what to do if a session must be cancelled, and how notes are stored. There is also space for you to discuss your needs and goals, and any worries about therapy. The first session can feel overwhelming — it's always OK to ask questions.

Can these sessions be covered by my insurance?

No — this service is available through private pay only.
